Richard, I was about to reply exactly as you did - buybacks are not to support the stock, but to build shareholder value if the economics work out correctly. In Deswell's case, they certainly do. Of course, the shares must be retired, not simply held in Treasury.

What if they have talked with customers, existing and new, and they see the potential to grow sales (and earnings) in the next few months?

Perhaps enough sales growth to require additional expansion or thru an acquisition. There are many companies in Asia that cannot supply growing customers because of a capital shortage. I believe this to be the reason they were able to get the VTech business - suppliers unable to grow with VTech.
