<<Ala may be considering another channel also.>> Yup, Hayes may have been delayed too long. Notice in the annoncement below Hayes is always mentioned as selecting Alcatel--not the other way around. I doubt if ALA will miss them. sg

HAYES and ALCATEL MIETEC REACH SUPPLY AGREEMENT

New DynaMiTe DMT ADSL Chipset Offers Improved Performance, Reduced Power Consumption, and Lower Cost

Atlanta, GA, and Brussels, Belgium, 1 July, 1997 -- Hayes Microcomputer Products announced today that it has selected Alcatel Mietec to provide its family of discrete multitone (DMT) ADSL chipsets for use in high-speed ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) modems. On June 9, Hayes and Alcatel announced an agreement to manufacture and market end-to-end ADSL solutions to customers in the US and overseas.

The Mietec DynaMiTe chipset, consisting of an analog front end (AFE) chip and a DMT chip with an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) framer, modulates very high data rate bit streams (i.e. up to 8 Mbps) into ordinary copper wire in use by telephone companies throughout the world.

"The Mietec chipset is an ideal choice for ADSL implementation," said Charlie Riehm, Hayes VP of Engineering. "It includes all the required functions to meet the ADSL standards in a very compact, low-power kit and has well-defined interfaces that basically do not change over time. That's important when manufacturing in volume."

"We are moving the company into the next era of personal communications," said Joe Formichelli, President and CEO of Hayes. "This chipset will be used in ADSL modems going to consumers and businesses in the USA and then into worldwide markets. This is exciting technology."

"We are delighted that Hayes has selected Mietec to supply their ADSL chips for their CPE equipment," stated Vincent Roland, Sales and Marketing Director for Alcatel Mietec. "Hayes' strength in the PC-oriented data communications business, teamed with Alcatel's leading ADSL technology, will give this market the user friendliness and reliability required to meet the growing needs of multimedia networked applications. 'Hayes compatible' was the watchword for voiceband modems," he added. "We believe that 'Hayes and Alcatel compatible' will be the mark of security for DMT modems."

"We looked at all the current DMT vendors before selecting the Mietec solution," said Alan Adamson, director of Hayes' Broadband Products Business Unit. "The low power, high-level of integration and ongoing cost reduction plans fit our needs. And of course the use of Alcatel technology will ensure interworking with the digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs) deployed by major telecom operators worldwide over the next few years."

By using both DMT and ATM, users will receive the maximum throughput
