News all around it seems. Bloomberg is again reporting that a settlement with the states is gaining support. Also, Dow Jones is reporting that 3Q profits for tobacco companies MO and RN will differ greatly.

With domestic tobacco volume down some 3% and international shipments flat with a year ago, the company still managed healthy quarterly profits both at home and abroad. Philip Morris has finally allowed the year's string of cigarette price increases to hit its bottom line rather than respend much of that money in its businesses...

Overall, Philip Morris should report that due to margin expansion and the leveraging of certain fixed costs, overseas earnings rose 11% to $1.38 billion, analysts said. Profits would have been as much as 18% higher without the negative effects of foreign currency exchanges, Black said.

RJR looks like its taking a real beating, while MO appears to be as strong as ever. I can't wait for the earnings announcement -- scheduled for Oct 20th, right before my long overdue vacation!

Choo choo baby,
