GSM to Continue Domination of Digital Cellular Market; But cdmaOne Sales are Growing
More Rapidly, Says New Report

Business Wire - October 12, 1998 08:31

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1998--According to a new study of the wireless market written by Micrologic Research and published by Forward
Concepts, the demand for cdmaOne telephones is growing more rapidly than the demand for GSM phones.

However, the study also says that GSM's head start in the market almost guarantees that it will continue to be the most popular digital cellular standard until at least
2003.

The "Wireless99" report forecasts that the market for GSM cellular telephones will grow from $15.5 billion in 1999 to $24.5 billion in 2003, a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of 12.1 percent. During the same period, it forecasts the worldwide cdmaOne cellular market will grow from $3,5 billion to $20.4 billion, a
compound growth rate of 55.9 percent. The IS-136 digital cellular standard, sometimes called American TDMA, is forecasted to have a more modest effect on the
market with worldwide handset sales of $1.4 billion in 1999 growing to only $3.5 billion in 2003.

Despite the economic slowdown, the Wireless99 report forecasts that there will be limited third-generation (3G) cellular service available in Europe and Japan by
2001 and in North American by 2002. The number of 3G cellular subscribers is predicted to reach 16.9 million in Europe, 12.5 million in Japan, and 10.6 million in
the Americas by the end of 2005. The study predicts that there will be at least two 3G standards. Europe will use W-CDMA/TD-CDMA and Latin America will
use cdma2000. North America and parts of Asia, including Japan, will use both standards.

North American infrastructure providers such as Lucent Technologies and Motorola are developing the W-CDMA technology that will enable them to participate in
the European 3G market. Ericsson, which does not supply cdmaOne infrastructure and has announced no plans to participate in the cdma2000 market, may find
itself without the technology to supply next-generation cellular infrastructure and terminals in some of the world's most rapidly growing cellular markets cites the
report.

Wireless99 covers a wide variety of wireless markets in addition to the four chapters dedicated to cellular. The study indicates that the revenues from the shipments
of Personal HandyPhone (PHS) cordless telephones in Japan peaked in 1997 and are predicted to decline over the forecast period. The market for European Digital
Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) telephones is predicted to grow to $6.2 billion in 2003. The report forecasts there will be 13.2 million subscribers
to satellite-based telephone systems in 2003 and wireless LAN shipments are predicted to grow to $2.6 billion in the year 2003.

Micrologic Research believes this to be the most extensive analysis of the wireless communications market available. The 403-page publication contains 188 tables,
graphs, and figures. Wireless99, report No. 840, is priced at $2,850 in North America for the first copy with substantial discounts for multi-copy orders. The price
outside North America is $2,950.
