Frankly, I avoid it because I don't want the accounting heartburn. Checked with my broker. No problem doing covered options in an IRA. Simply need an option agreement executed. Got them sending them out so we can play.

Employeer 401k programs and matching contributions.

Most of the folks who are in these funds are there because of these plans.

If someone chooses to go outside of the system then they loose out on the matching cash.

Now regarding these folks .. no tax bills (yet) because these funds are inside of IRA's and 401k's.

BUT!!! surveys show that only 19% of folks know that the DJIA is an average value of a set of stocks. Most folks think that it is the name of a stock. These are the folks who, having been taught that the market only goes up over time, hold the future direction of Mr Market. They really do not understand that this stuff can go down.
