MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1998--C-Cube Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: CUBE), the leading provider of digital video technology, today announced that Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) has selected C-Cube's AViA set-top decoder solution as the core digital video engine for JVC's set-top receiver that is being deployed for SKYPerfectTV! in Japan. SKYPerfecTV! is delivering more than 170 channels of television programming and services including video entertainment, educational and interactive services not previously available in Japan.
JVC's digital receiver takes advantage of C-Cube's set-top graphics performance to address the emerging requirements for a content-rich consumer interface as well as interactivity. The set-top supports multiple picture-in-graphics windows, allowing users to easily locate and select channels by displaying 16 promotional channels or 20 programs from a selected area of interest such as sports, news, Japanese movies, and foreign movies. This new set-top device also offers one of the industry's most advanced Electronic Program Guides (EPG), expanding the consumer's ability to navigate through the program listings and previews.
"Digital television is bringing consumers high-quality video and compelling entertainment and educational services," said David Baillie, vice president and general manager for C-Cube Microsystems' Consumer Network Products Division (CNP). "By combining C-Cube's digital video expertise and understanding of digital networks with JVC's strength in developing feature-rich consumer electronics, JVC's new set-top receivers provide a complete digital entertainment box to meet the consumer demand for video services beyond basic television programming."
The JVC receiver also provides two S-Video/Audio outputs, which connect the receiver to a television or VCR. This versatile design provides an upgradable platform, allowing additional communications functionality to be added.
"C-Cube has continually led the industry in delivering digital video solutions that address the needs of consumer video applications," said Fusao Kishi, Director and General Manager of Television Division, Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. for Japan Victor Corporation. "C-Cube's forward-looking features are helping us deliver on our promise of providing quality video as well as compelling content display to SKYPerfecTV! subscribers."
