Visio Corp. Captures Top Position in All Sales Categories
PR Newswire - October 13, 1998 09:30

Recent PC Data Report Reveals Growth Trends in Drawing Market

SEATTLE, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- According to recent data from the research firm, PC Data (Reston, Va.), which captures software sell-through information, Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO) has for the first time captured the lead position in U.S. sales in all the PC drawing and diagramming categories. Taking PC Data's drawing and painting category data and adjusting it for Visio's drawing and diagramming category, Visio also beat out all competitors in this category by garnering 42 percent of retail units sold, 59 percent of distribution units sold, and 85 percent of corporate units sold during the second quarter of 1998. In addition to the core Visio(R) product family (Visio Standard, Visio Professional and Visio Technical), the drawing and diagramming category represents all Corel drawing products (CorelDRAW, Corel Graphics Pack, Corel Office Companion, CorelFlow and Corel VisualCAD), Micrografx products (FlowCharter, ABC Snapgraphics, Graphics Suite and Designer), Autodesk products (Autodesk AutoCAD LT, AutoSketch and Drafix QuickCAD), and others.

In the second quarter, Visio also made a strong showing in the business diagramming markets where Visio Professional became the co-leader in the retail channel, the leader in the corporate channel, and made a strong showing in the distribution channel.

"We have continued to see very favorable changes over the past year in our market share," said Gary Gigot, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer at Visio Corp. "We have long been strong in the corporate category, and now recent figures show that we are leading in all sales categories. Our 25 percent growth in overall units in distribution from first to second quarters is also very encouraging. It's clear from this data that we are becoming the standard for drawing and diagramming in business."

This growth opportunity may be helped by government organizations, which although cannot endorse one product over the other, can request files in a specific format. Recently a Washington State port sent out a solicitation for engineering services that requested all drawings be provided in a Visio drawing format.

Currently there are more than 2.25 million Visio users worldwide and an average installed base growth of 10 percent per quarter. To achieve this growth, Visio products are now reaching a broad base of customers from a variety of industries, including:

* automotive (BMW)
* banking (First Union Bank)
* chemical industry (Nalco Chemical)
* consumer (Nike)
* federal government (Patent Office, US State Department, and US Air
Force)
* independent computing services (Automatic Data Processing)
* utility companies (Pacific Gas & Electric)
* wood and paper products (Weyerhauser)
