Scumbria - re: " I assume that 1) Intel is giving deep discounts to Gateway. 2) This system is targeted at people with extra cash or a lack of common sense."

Intel is bringing their best technology to the masses.

REJOICE !

CHEAP XEONS FOR all the HOMELESS and poor consumers !

Think of it !

AMD is hyping a non-shipping K7 that will "beat Intel's best Xeons", but Intel is driving Xeons into the mainstream TODAY.

This may be a preemptive attack on the K7, to insure that AMD has to price it for Peanuts when it finally does become available.

Scumbria, re: <I assume that 1) Intel is giving deep discounts to Gateway. 2) This system is targeted at people with extra cash or a lack of common sense.>

This announcement puzzled me as well. We all know how big that Xeon module is, and how much of a power hog it must be.

Then again, the original Covington Celeron (the one sans L2 cache) puzzled me, until I realized that Intel was establishing the Celeron platform, using Covington only as a stop-gap measure until Mendocino was available. Paul already hinted that Intel could be pre-empting the future lower-end K7 systems. But could this announcement be the beginning of a new plan by Intel to push the Xeon processors into the desktop? If so, then that would mean that the current 450 MHz Xeon is only being used as a stop-gap measure until a more suitable processor was available.

Xeoleron, anyone?

Hey, Scumbria, some of us like to drive the best!

I drive a Porsche, even though I never use the top 2/3 of its speed, or need all eight of its cyclinders (remember the 4-8 Caddie?).
What do you drive?
