IDG's InfoWorld First to Report on Possible Re-Branding of Windows NT 5.0

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1998--InfoWorld, the enterprise computing newsweekly, today broke the story that Microsoft is considering a name change for the next version of Windows NT. The company is also expected to release the new version earlier than previously anticipated.

As reported by InfoWorld editors Cara Cunningham, Bob Trott and Ephraim Schwartz, two candidates have emerged: Windows Professional, or Pro and Windows 2000 to replace Windows NT 5.0. Windows NT 5.0 is the company's next-generation server/workstation operating system.

ISVs have indicated that Microsoft is now planning a March 1999 announcement date for its new version and will release the product in June 1999.

PC OEMs stand to gain from the earlier release date. One Compaq official is quoted as saying, "There certainly is an advantage to get more customers on NT 5.0. You want to bring products forward as quickly as possible, and because customers require more processing power to run it, we are already motivated."

The full report can be read on page one of today's issue of InfoWorld and on InfoWorld Electric (www.infoworld.com).

I just sent an email to Herb Greenberg....I think he should see how we feel about his factless rumor spreading. Here's what I had to say:

"Sorry Herb, but most CPQ shareholders now feel you're on the take from companies shorting the stock…Your comments last week were not only false rumors designed to start the panic selling that occurred, but highly inaccurate…You say there's risk involved…show me proof, not hearsay…when the earnings report comes out on Wednesday will you go back on MSNBC and eat your words? Or will it be time to talk down the stock for the next earnings period? I advise you to take a look at the SI bulletin board, and see what compaq shareholders are really thinking…..have a nice day...Carlos."
