Theres a pretty good webpage for Peta:

peta-online.org

They keep up with current issues on their alerts page. I got involved when there was a case (in Iowa I think) where these teenagers went to a pet store or humane society type place and killed 30 cats with baseball bats - remember that? And when it went to court all they got was a small fine. I sent a donation to the Noahs Ark where the cats were living... a very sad situation indeed and to be honest I wonder about the future lives of those boys. Future murderers they may be, and with essentially no consequences for this hideous act it sends a message that people can get away with anything.

Some of these Peta issues are a little over the top for me but others I do care about so I keep up with the current issues. Odd that their webpage is a .org which implies a government agency right?
