Not familiar with patent laws and whether there are any advantages to assigning patents outside the company. Advantages meaning better protection of processes. The immediate disadvantage of not "owning" assignment of a patent, I imagine, is that the company is prevented from licensing the technology and, therefore, will not benefit from the full enjoyment of the patent (read profit). This does not seem to make sense in a closely held company.

I retract earlier concerns about the patent(s) as related to profitability. The patent concerns while not entirely misplaced, due to the fact that the "founders" reserve the right to license technology elsewhere, do not hinder overall success and profitability of Phoenix Metals' operations.

Management ensured that the company has requisite tools and resources to be profitable and independent, and their effort is commendable.
