>>So Partition Magic (Dos program, correct?) will not work on NT files formatted in NTFS?<<

The drive is formatted, not the files. You can copy a file from a DOS floppy to an NTFS drive....you just cannot access it from Win95 or DOS.

I am still using the old version (3.x) and have no experience with NT. I think things have changed since I described the Partition Magic execution. We will have to get the details from Sean or Dave.

I believe Dave indicated that Partition Magic now executes in NT and Win95 without going into DOS mode.

PowerQuest has three (at least) programs.

1. Partition Magic

2. Drive Image

3. Drive Copy

Partition Magic operates on the harddrive formats and partitions. Once it has been executed (however that is now accomplished) it will modify NTFS formatted harddrives as well as FAT, FAT32 and others.

Drive Image creates a file and at least until the recent past the file was best kept on a drive with a format that DOS can read ie FAT and FAT 32. The image file could be kept on a removable media that DOS can read and then restored from that location to the NTFS drives...executing Drive Image from floppies in the case of NT.

I can't speak for Drive Copy except...It may be the similar or equal to the option in Partition Magic to copy a partition. This is the option I use to clone partitions. First I use the partition functions in Partition Magic to create some free space. This can be done by deleting partitions or resizing them. Then I use the copy function to copy a partition. The copy function copies both format (FAT, FAT32...) and the files to the new location. I believe the Partition Magic copy function would copy an NTFS partition with all of its files the same as it does for FAT and FAT 32. We need confirmation here. Once I get NT working I will try to clone NT.

The FAT 2GB limitation is per partition. For example you can use an 8GB harddrive and divide it into four FAT partitions. You would see four drive letters C:, D:, E:, F: assuming no other harddrives.
