Merrill to offer free online research - WSJ Reuters Story - October 15, 1998 05:12 NEW YORK, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch plans to give the public free access to its equities research over the Internet during a four-month trial period, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. Company vice chairman John Steffens told the Journal this experiment does not contradict Merrill's focus on full-service brokering, the report said. The nation's larger broker, for one thing, plans to use what it learns as a source of leads for its legion of brokers, the report said. The limited time offer also gives the company a chance to show off what it has to offer in the way of research, Steffens told the paper. But yet another company official, Maddy Weinstein, senior vice president of strategic development in the brokerage unit, said this move is a sea change for the company. The company is realizing the Internet is a core part of communicating with customers, Weinstein told the paper. From November 2 to February 28, Merrill will put real-time complete research on a new free web site, the report said. Some analysts said Merrill is feeling pressure from the online-trading trend that pushes low-cost trading as much as anything else, the report said.
