impristine,

I am saddened to learn of your affliction and know only too well the horrendous ordeal you surely endured in the system. I am gratified that you do not affix blame, for that is precisely what I was trying to get across in the post to which you replied.

You may in fact be correct in your assessment that second-hand smoke caused your recurrent tumor, but were I your diagnostician I would have tons of other questions.

No one should beat up on themselves or on their friends and relatives who smoke or have smoked, nor should we allow the system to do it. We must demand definitive diagnostic approaches based on a thorough personal medical history, and not let the system skate on this most convenient of catch-all villains.

I sincerely hope I haven't offended.

On a lighter note, I offer the following:

Cigarette warnings tobacco executives would like to see:

-Medical studies have proven you can still live with only one lung.

-This is only one of hundreds of products that are slowly killing you.

-Smoking does not affect the fetuses of women who aren't pregnant.

-Refusing to inhale drastically reduces risk of lung cancer.

-Go ahead and drive or operate heavy machinery. It's perfectly fine.

-Cigarettes don't kill, matches do.

-Nicotine is not addictive because you know you could quit if you really wanted to.

-There have been no medical tests to conclusively prove smoking is a teeth-staining, smelly, pukey habit. And we're not all that ready to concede the part about it causing heart disease either.

best, Holly
