Frank, regarding Canada's first diamond mine, CBC Newsworld is having a TV special about this at around 11:30a.m.EDT, or 8:30a.m.PDT, today. The incredible story ending in the opening of the "Ekati" Diamet mine in the NWT, today officially, will be highlighted.

SOME FACTS ON THE EKATI DIAMOND MINE:

Where - 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, in tundra 150 km north of treeline.

Ownership - Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd. of Australia, 51 per cent; Kelowna based Dia Met Minerals, 29 per cent; geologists Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson, 20 per cent.

Production - 10,000 carats a day, about four per cent of global production; early production expected to be worth $130 US per carat.

Jobs - 830 permanent jobs over 22-year life of mine; 70 per cent northern hires, 30 per cent of those to be aboriginal.

Camp Life - 375 [people] at any one time in dorm; no alcohol; hunting, fishing or feeding wildlife prohibited; facilities include racquet courts, exercise rooms, gym and games room.
