Jeez, I don't know the answer to your question. In the long run, probably the very long run, but who knows? the ultimate solution will be all E commerce over the internet.

Private EDI networks have a lot going for them now (I used to work for one of them in another industry) and they have an entrenched and well working position in a lot of places. The costs are really not that much and very well worth the economies they bring to a company. There is a very big financial incentive for EDI networks to sign up additional companies because then they get to go after all the trading partners of the new company and you get the wonderful "water on a blotter" effect. I don't see the Internet having a comparable locus of incentive, aside from the security and support issues they currently have. Maybe it will be companies like HRBC or OMKT that will undertake the missionary work. IF they do, they will have hopskotched into the future all the trial and error and basic philosophical groundwork that the EDI companies have been doing for the last 15 years.
So are HRBC and OMKT buys now? I thought so 5 or 10 points higher than at this level so what do I know? I do think that the CEOs of both companies should be fired for dropping the ball.
