I think the only manipulation the MMs really do is widen the spreads to ridiculous levels when they get nervous. That's my biggest beef with them. I hate wide spreads. I like to see tinies only. No eigths or higher. When I see quarter spreads I always think--what a friggin rip off. MMs do have a way to signal traders that they have a large buy or sell order so that traders will move the price the way they want temporarily, i.e. so they can short the shares to a buyer at a higher price. Not overt manipulation there, and we're not talking about real large price moves either--maybe a few levels tops.
I didn't reshort COMS when I had the chance.
