Embedded Microconverter

NORWOOD, Mass., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices, Inc. and emWare,
Inc.(R) today announced a partnership to provide easier development and
implementation of device networking for manufacturers of utility meters,
vending machines, industrial controls, and other embedded applications.
Analog Devices' family of 8-bit ADuC8xx MicroConverters now includes a port of
the emWare EMIT(R) (Embedded Micro Internetworking Technology(TM)) software,
allowing manufacturers of embedded equipment and developers of embedded
application networks using the ADuC812 to deliver precision analog capability
with robust, user-friendly networked control, access and monitoring for
devices. The Analog Devices and emWare solution provides Internet and
Intranet connectivity with cost savings from reduced development time and
fewer resource requirements for embedded systems developers.
"The combination of Analog Devices and emWare technology provides our
customers with the sensor measurement and control along with the networking
access and control they need for their products," said Tremont Miao, Analog
Devices' Product Marketing Manager.
The Analog Devices family of MicroConverters is designed for a broad range
of applications, including power monitoring, industrial control,
instrumentation and portable applications. A high-performance ADC, multiple
DACs, and voltage references, combined with Flash and EEPROM memories, plus
the classic 8052 core, provide a wealth of proven applications code and
accuracy not found in previous microcontrollers.
"The MicroConverter provides an innovative combination of superior data
acquisition with an 8-bit microcontroller, giving customers the ability to add
high-level processing to sensor control systems," said Christopher Sontag,
Chief Technology Officer and co-founder, emWare, Inc. "The addition of emWare
technology helps fulfill the potential of the MicroConverter by extending
networking capabilities to its high-speed, high-accuracy data acquisition
process.
At the core of the EMIT software distributed networking architecture is
the industry's smallest micro-web server which uses as little as 1 kB of
memory at the device. Standard Internet technologies, such as Java, HTTP and
a Web browser interface are used to access, control and monitor devices
through emGateway(TM), the communication link between IP networks and
lightweight networks such as I2C, RS-485, CAN, and RF.
The user interface is a standard Web browser in most applications, using
industry-standard browser technology to reduce client side development. The
user interface can operate on a remote Web browser, a directly connected
laptop, or even a handheld PDA. Java Bean-compliant objects, including knobs,
switches, sliders, graphs, and displays, are included within EMIT, allowing
developers to replicate device functions or expose functions not normally
available to users.
Where a user interface is not necessary, EMIT can connect networked
equipment directly to applications or databases. EMIT's open, distributed
network solution provides a complete software toolkit for networking embedded
devices.
With sales of $1.24 billion for fiscal 1997, Analog Devices (NYSE: ADI) is
a leading manufacturer of precision high-performance integrated circuits used
in analog and digital signal processing applications. Headquartered in
Norwood, Massachusetts, the company employs approximately 7,500 people
worldwide and has manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts, California, North
Carolina, Ireland, the Philippines and Taiwan.
