Intel is ALWAYS cautious! You've got to read between the lines.

Paul,

Regarding Intel's caution - consider that only at the beginning of September they advised that revenue would be 8-10% over 2Q 98 and then come in at 14% over instead. I'd call that cautious too, but as a long-time Intel watcher, I'm used to their caution. At the end of 2H 98, they had said, "The company expects revenue for the third quarter of 1998 to be flat to slightly up from second quarter revenue of $5.9 billion."

I expect that the 4Q 98 guidance of "The company expects revenue for the fourth quarter of 1998 to be up slightly from third quarter revenue of $6.7 billion" is every bit as cautious. I do note that this time they removed the word "flat". This is an example of Intel caution.

I try to keep in mind the vast array of new products that will be moving to the market this Christmas quarter. If anybody can't remember what an upside surprise really looks like, try looking at the 4Q 96 earnings report.

This note is posted to you on SI utilizing my new 450 MHz PII - It was my pleasure to contribute this purchase towards Intel's earnings this quarter. This may be anecdotal but there are many, many more like me out there.
