Compaq Adds Features to Alta Vista
In Effort to Boost Its Online Profile

By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

HOUSTON -- Compaq Computer Corp. revised its Alta Vista
Internet search engine with a simplified inquiry process and other
features and said it is seeking more deals to lift Alta Vista's
Internet presence.

The changes are the first major improvements to the Alta Vista
search engine since the computer maker inherited it as part of its
$9.1 billion purchase of Digital Equipment Corp. in June. Shortly
after the purchase, some analysts questioned Compaq's interest
in the search-engine business, but executives said they were
committed to it. Rod Schrock, senior vice president of Compaq's
consumer business, said the company's quarterly investment in
Alta Vista reached into the tens of millions of dollars.

"We want to evolve Alta Vista from a
pre-eminent online search engine to a
pre-eminent online destination," he said.

Among the improvements is a so-called
natural-language inquiry process, developed with Ask Jeeves
Inc., a Berkeley, Calif., software developer, that allows a person
to type a question instead of a keyword to locate information on
the Web.

Compaq also added a search process that invokes software
from Spyglass Inc.'s SurfWatch Software unit to prevent children
from accessing material that parents might find objectionable.

Mr. Schrock said Compaq is shopping for other strategic
partnerships.
