To survive, the Republican party has made itself a home for religious extremists who want to shred the wall between church and state set up by the founders.

Truthfully, they want to establish an official state religion, and that religion is fundamentalist protestant Christianity, in some of it's most intolerant forms. In particular, the variant preached by those showboating multimillionaire TV preachers like Swaggert, Robertson, and Fallwell, who believe only they can possibly be right.

You can see what sort of people these are by the delight they take in pointing out that the dubious donors Gore recruited had among them Asians and Buddhist Monks, something apparently worth putting into the talking points used by any of their ilk needing to discuss this with the media. And noticed, over and over.

It is exactly religious intolerance that the Republican Party is promoting, first of all by ignoring the Constitution.
