Craig,

Actually, I don't see things that badly for NSM. Of course, every chip is at least 6 months too late to make a real impact, but still, the competition is going to be on NSM's turf, not Intel's and AMD's.

There just will not be enough demand for all of the supposed "high end", server, or workstation chips at prices Intel and AMD expect. Intel alone is planning to have 2 to 3 different designs out there at the same time, now AMD introduced a formidable competitor. All of these are going to be chasing a market of 10, 20 million at best. I think they have an impression that the market is bigger, and this misjudgement will kill the prices. When Intel was alone, they could ration chips in a way they could extract the most revenue from people for whom the price is no object.

The remaining 80+ million chips will be sold to people not willing to pay extra $100, not to mention the premium Intel and AMD expects.

The mainstream will be ruled by ruthless price competition. Celeron, K6-2, K6-3, MXi, Maybe Coppermine (if it is what Paul says), K7 with no L2, Winchip, Rise chip, will all be fighting to stay above $100 ASP. The chips intended for the sub-$100 price will do better. Jalopeno seems ideal for low-middle end market. I wish it arrived earlier.

Of course, there will be the PCOAC next year.

Joe
