Malaysia's Gold [Viagra distributor] Shares Rise on Likely Viagra Release Bloomberg News October 13, 1998, 10:42 p.m. ET Malaysia's Gold Coin Shares Rise on Likely Viagra Release Kuala Lumpur, Oct. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Gold Coin (Malaysia) Bhd. shares rose as much as 16.9 percent on news the male- impotence drug Viagra had passed part of the approval process for sale in the country on doctor's prescription. Gold Coin's unit Zuellig Pharma Sdn. has the Malaysian distribution rights for Viagra, which is made by U.S.-based Pfizer Inc. The shares of Gold Coin, a feed and flour milling company, rose as much as 52 sen to 3.88 ringgit. Malaysia's Drug Control Authority completed its three-phase evaluation of the drug, state news agency Bernama said, citing Malaysia's Minister of Health Chua Jui Meng. While it has decided the drug can be registered and given to doctors, the country's Health Ministry has decided to take a ''wait and see'' approach before allowing it onto the market. ''We prefer to be cautious with regard to the use of this drug until we have more conclusive data on its safety profile,'' Chua said. The authority has recommended that Pfizer provide more information on the incidence of deaths among men who have taken the drug, also that educational programs be given to doctors who would prescribe Viagra. Although there's a delay in the drug's release, ''people still expect it to be launched,'' said Lo Fen Cheong, the institutional sales manager at HLG Securities Bhd. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received reports of deaths among men who took Viagra. --John O'Neill in Kuala Lumpur (603) 248-7000, through the
