Merced will not be in production until Mid 2000 and will probably have a reasonably long gestation period until software exploiting its capabilities is widely available and DEBUGGED, and MERCED system hardware will require a parallel development.

Intel is going FULL BORE with Cascades and Coppermine (1999) and Foster and Willammette (late 2000) devices to keep Intel at the leadership helm in 32 bit x86 processors.

Effectively, Intel is protecting its flanks with advanced 32 bit CPU development.

I suspect that there are even more advanced 32 bit CPUs in development beyond Willammette - aimed at an ever increasing segmented market several years out.
