j-g, did you see the cover story in The New York Times magazine this Sunday - "The Scolds"? (Unfortunately, it's not available on the web.) Anyway, it is about the evolution of the old-time libertarian conservatism into moralistic "theo-conservatism." Examines the views of the "intellectual elite" of the movement.

Given what you have written in your post, you might find it of interest.

I don't think it's a matter of which one is to be proud of. The Democratic party is the party of fiscally and morally bankrupt government programs: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Public Housing, National Health Care (proposed), and National Child Care (proposed); and a long and proud history of corrupt political machines in the major cities. Considering the Democrats' entitlement programs occupy about 70% of the budget, there's no way one could make a case that the Republicans are on a par with them on the issue of big government and individual rights. There's nothing more intrusive than taxing 23-30% of one's income to support Social Security and their proposed National Health Care.
