The Vancouver Sun reports in the lead business story in its Wednesday edition that a former California preacher perpetrated a massive fraud on British Columbia investors through a web of offshore accounts, a British Columbia Securities Commission hearing was told. Reporter David Baines notes that Patrick Robitaille, a lawyer for commission staff, said in opening remarks that evidence will show that Gary Stanhiser, a former Seventh Day Adventist pastor, raised more than $15-million from more than 300 investors, about half from B.C. The money was deposited into accounts at Canaccord Capital in the names of three offshore companies: Excel Funding, Diomondmark Investments and Excel International Investment. Mr. Robitaille says that although the offshore companies were ostensibly controlled by offshore trusts, the real power behind the trusts was Mr. Stanhiser. He says the offshore companies, acting on Mr. Stanhiser's instructions, used investors' money to buy $13-million worth of stock directly from junior companies.
