Hedge funds due for supervision - RBA's Macfarlane

SYDNEY, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Rules governing hedge funds are likely to become firmer with the funds either made to reveal more about their net positions in markets or supervised in some manner via the banks that extend them credit, Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Ian Macfarlane said on Wednesday.

In a speech in Singapore, released here, Macfarlane said funds had come under heavy criticism in recent weeks as global market turmoil escalated.

''As recently as three months ago, if you complained about the activities of hedge funds you were regarded as paranoid and you received a sermon on the dangers of shooting the messenger,'' said Macfarlane.

''Now, no one has got a good word to say about them, and they are likely to soon be brought into either the disclosure net or some form of supervision via their connection with banks,'' hea said.
