Newbridge ATM Radio Interface Receives International
Engineering Consortium InfoVision Award
NEWS RELEASE TRANSMITTED BY CANADIAN CORPORATE NEWS
FOR: NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS CORPORATION
TSE SYMBOL: NNC NYSE SYMBOL: NN
OCTOBER 14,
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS--ARIC Integral Component of Newbridge
Award-Winning Broadband Wireless Solution
Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that its
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) Radio Interface (ARIC), a key
element in its industry-leading Local Multipoint Distribution
Service (LMDS) solution, has received the International
Engineering Consortium (IEC) InfoVision Award in the wireless
category. The IEC InfoVision Awards recognize the year's most
innovative information industry products and services based on
their innovation, uniqueness, market impact, customer benefit, and
value to society. "This year's InfoVision Award winners have clearly earned the
accolades and recognition they are receiving," said Forum Director
John Janowiak. "The entries demonstrate the vision of these
companies, which only can be described as leading-edge. The
technology advancements demonstrated by these winning entries will
have a positive impact on the growth and advancement of the industry."
"We are proud to have the ARIC honored for its flexibility and
innovation because it is an integral component of our broadband
wireless solution, extending managed, multi-service capabilities
over the air," said Bernard Herscovich, Vice President, Wireless
Networks, who accepted the award on behalf of Newbridge Networks.
"The Newbridge(r) end-to-end solution for LMDS operators was
recently chosen by both WIC Connexus and Maxlink for their 28 GHz
broadband wireless deployments across Canada."
The ARIC is the first broadband wireless processor developed to
integrate in the backplane of a standards-compliant ATM switch.
Integrating the ARIC into the flagship MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170
Multiservices Switch enables the switch to perform as a wireless
base station. By providing protocol interworking between the ATM
network and the wireless interface, the ARIC allows the
statistical gain and Quality of Service of the ATM network to be
extended to wireless users by dynamically allocating them
bandwidth. The ARIC consists of digital circuitry such as
backplane interface for ATM traffic management, as well as high
speed digital modems and intermediate frequency channel tuning up to 2 GHz.

Glenn --

TM mentioned directory management and specifically FastLane several times at the AGM. He didn't mention the Microsoft beta tests so this comes as a pleasant surprise.

I'm also hoping we can get more light on the AT&T-MSFT contract for ATM. It being managed corporate environments certainly appears to be NN's solution.

The Newbridge* Global Services Management Platform (GSMP) has been designed for the global reach and extensive scope of the AT&T Managed Bandwidth Service. AT&T Managed Bandwidth Service brings together the strengths of AT&T private line, frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) service offering with the power of the Newbridge GSMP and networking equipment into a single managed solution for corporate network voice, image, video and data traffic requirements.

I'll see if I can find out more.

Later ---
