BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Oct 14 (Reuters) - AT&T Corp., the No. 1 U.S. long distance company, said Wednesday it had won an 18-month contract from Microsoft Corp. to provide a global data network that will link nearly 70 locations in the U.S. and Japan to the software company's headquarters in Redmond, Wash.

The contract positions AT&T as Microsoft's primary provider of ATM, or asynchronous transfer mode, in the U.S.

Microsoft will carry most of its applications over the ATM network, including customer service, product development, and business and intra-corporate e-mail.

AT&T has been Microsoft's primary data network provider for corporate requirements in the U.S. since 1994, through its domestic private line services.

The ATM network implementation is under way and is expected to be completed by the end of November.

In a statement, AT&T did not provide the value of the contract, and company spokesmen were not available for comment.

ATM's Higher Bandwidth, Reliability Provides Cost-Effective Boost to Product Development

BASKING RIDGE, N.J, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T has been awarded an 18-month contract by Microsoft Corporation to provide an Asychronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network that will link nearly 70 locations in the US and Japan to the company's headquarters in Redmond, Wash. The contract positions AT&T as Microsoft's primary ATM provider in the US.

Microsoft will carry most of its mission-critical applications over the ATM network, including customer service, product development, and business and intra-corporate e-mail. Total network capacity will be nearly 600 megabytes of bandwidth, with port sizes ranging from T1 (1.5Mbps) to OC3 (155Mbps).

"AT&T has a proven track record of successfully supporting many of Microsoft's voice and data requirements. Because of the tremendous potential for growth in our networking requirements, we were looking for a quality telecommunications service provider, with leading-edge technical knowledge and support at competitive rates. AT&T was able to provide all of these," Arne Josefsberg, General Manager of Global Networking at Microsoft.

"ATM offers Microsoft high bandwidth, reliable services that allow us to implement Quality of Service (QoS) features, integrating data and voice on a common network. The network will support a very wide range of applications including Multicast and streaming media and will support the regular transmission of multi-gigabyte files between geographically dispersed development teams."

AT&T has been Microsoft's primary data network provider for corporate requirements in the United States since 1994, through its domestic private line services. The ATM network implementation is currently under way and is expected to be complete by the end of November.

"AT&T has made significant investments in its ATM capacity and reliability to meet the increased demand we are seeing for high speed connectivity from many of our customers including Microsoft," said Joe Lueckenhoff, product vice president for data network services for AT&T.

In addition to supporting critical communications now, AT&T's ATM network can provide the core infrastructure to eventually transition Microsoft to a global IP network. Business customers interested in more information about AT&T's ATM networks can contact their AT&T account teams.
