Chances are they could've. However, that isn't the point. Established organizations love high-profile contracts and arrangements. To string together servers on Linux like that would not have been elegant NOR engendered a "sense of credibility"on the part of investors. It would appear to be a publicity stunt (not that what they did was anything more than the same thing that cost more money), and would not "win" them goodwill.
