Another factor in large spreads is whether at the instant you see the spread it may be transitioning to a new level. Bids and Askeds do not move simultaneously. If price is going up, the Asked will widen before the Bid can catch up with it. (Similar story for down moves.)

At the end of the day, according to what I see with the SI postings, the final spread was only 1/8 of a point.
