Tony - Agree with you on the strange Toga adds for Xerox. (I think they are supposed to be a spoof of a Greek Chorus.) Looks to me like a potentially good idea gone berserk through overexposure and wacky execution. The first time I saw it I thought that it was kinda neat. After a few repetitions it makes your skin crawl. Kept seeing the ad on the ALCS last night (a lot of repetitions) and they will probably keep running right through the World Series. I suspect they wanted to give the impression that Xerox is really hip (to use a phrase that dates me). But they are oddly disconcerting. Something like those Suburu lying car salesman ads that started out cute and made you uncomfortable real fast.

Tony - Re: "do you think it can get to enough volume next year to
reach "killer app" proportions? "

It will take continued development to improve the quality of Voice Recognition - hence the importance of Katmai New Instructions.

A real potential will be if and when non-English speaking Voice Recognition becomes viable, since keyboard text entry for Japanese, Mandarin, etc is still very cumbersome.

Again, we are moving towards that goal but more improvements in software are required, which will place more burdens on the CPU performance - ergo, KNI !

Paul

RE: Xerox ad ---

I think it is Greek -- a parody of "Clash of Titans" with a cast of all stars including, if I don't mistake myself, Ursula Andress as Aphrodite and Harry Hamlin as Perseus, Burgess Meredith, and Lord Olivier as Zeus. A real dog. I think they used the same bowl to spy on earth.

YES! Voice is ready for prime time. I've seen demos with some programs. The accuracy was excellent. Check it out at the stores. The problem is more that we are currently using a GUI interface. It's been fine tuned strictly with the mouse and keyboard in mind. The whole concept of user interface must be rethought to take advantage of voice capabilities. VGUI?!?

For example a simple calculator would not have to show many of the keys(ex. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0). A larger answer space could be shown with just the answer. A user would just say. calculator "what is 239 times 456.3"? A large screen would show the answer and not much else. 239456.3 in large font
a traditional GUI calculator would also still ship with windows for a long time.

Personal information manager's interfaces will also change greatly soon.
