Here is a case of the news taking things out of context. It may be true that there will be an unseasonal INCREASE in hardware sales in the first half of 1999 due to the problem (and the second half might be lower in comparison). Then again, it isn't clear such will trail off in the latter part of the year. Here's why:

Y2K solution rollout (involving new PCs and software) will still be occurring up to the last minute...and AS roll-outs occur over larger areas of a given company, new hardware (read that PC workstations) must be purchased at that time. PCs ARE NOT bought up-front for large Y2K projects, they are brought in as solutions are rolled out onto the LAN.
