They did not figure on AMD.

They thought PII core was fine and then merced would take over in 99.

Merced will be late and performance will not be compelling.

AMD is talking about running K7 at 1000Ghz in yr 2000-2001.

They have come up with adding gobs of L2 cache as a way of bloating their chip die sizes for minimal performance gains.

The K7 at 140 mm2 is smaller than Celeron die sizes.

Absolutely amazing that AMD has this 1-2 year kead over Intel.

The key will be if they can manufacture in volumes.

Margins should be Intel like as they should be able to have ASP's in the range of $150-250 with 60% gross margins.
