in conference notes HP CEO based his prediction on 2nd half '99 slowdown due to Y2K and new competition from Xerox in the printing business. However, Dell's growth predictions show that over 1/2 of new purchases have been internet based with that percentage increasing going forward. Y2K conversion currently amounts to less than 8%. increased 1) laptop sales, 2) NT based systems, 3) new technology based, (video, voice, etc.), 4) general replacement cycle, 5) bigger home market penetration and 6) non-pc based sales via internet are the primary movers going forward, not y2K. y2K is allowing some companies to replace old systems with new.

more likely scenario that toward the 2nd half of 99 companies will rush to replace more systems because of y2k.

HP still expects to grow in the mid teens next year according to DJN.
