Clearly, Applied Materials would only be interested in Cymer if and when it also purchased either ASM Litho or Silicon Valley Group.

Owning a laser maker without the ability to make Steppers to put them into would be of little benefit.

Time isn't necessarily an advantage with any high-tech company. Over time, technology changes, and in 5 years, a completely different technology could be at the forefront. Today's "winner" can be a "loser" in 5 years.
