When I was a young twerp we used to play on lakes and ponds. Miracle nobody ever fell through and drowned. Used to lose a lot of pucks under the snow. Eventually graduated to rinks, uniforms, etc. I remember going back on the lake after a few years on rinks, trying to impress everyone with the slick moves, and remembering the hard way that lake ice has cracks, sticks, and other obstacles that rinks lack. Also neglected to wear the pads. Playing in full gear makes you forget how hard ice really is.
