Search begins for Alexander's gold
Thu, 15 Oct 1998

A hunt is underway in northern Greece for the fabled gold mine of Alexander the Great.

After years of trying to trace the site, bounty hunters claim they are very close to discovering it.

Armed with what they say is an ancient treasure map, gold diggers say this time they are sure they are on the right track.

The hunters, who are all from Athens, have begun excavating in a field near the northern Greek town of Gavala, where they believe the gold mine probably lies at a depth of 15 metres.
