Jim;

re:"One thing that I can not understand is VLSI not using more of its $300 Million of cash to increase share repurchases?"

We were having that same discussion over on the CPQ thread this afternoon. Some relevant points were...

1) Good way to distribute tax-free dividend to shareholders.

2) Companies that bought back shares this summer are not looking like very shrewd investors today. Companies announcing buybacks now are getting a better deal for shareholders. I'm sure there are many people out there wishing they had more cash now to buy shares.

3) It won't be viewed as an emergency measure to support falling stock price. Most damage has been done, if not overdone, already in VLSI's case.

They may be saving cash for an aquisition since other companies markets caps have been slashed recently. Sounds like they definitely have enough to fund day-to-day ops, R&D, etc.

A buyback seems prudent to me.

Kelvin

Jim, is it reasonable that if VLSI's CDMA chip is good, that it has not yet had any design wins? After tossing and turning all night, this scares me more than anything. Is VLSI's offering going to end up in the trash heap like everyone else's (except QCOM's, of course).

Hi Jim, Remember that VLSI did retire some debt with that cash this qtr. That has a net "good" effect during times of slim earnings as well. Not as dramatic as a share buy-back, but good for the books.

Best regards, Tom
