About boot-up times- I just leave my home machine on all the time. It's hooked up to an UPS and I just switch off the monitor. As I understand it, the power used with the monitor off is pretty small. Another advantage is that I don't have to worry about my kids not going through the shut-down properly on OS/2 or Win95, the two OS's I have on it. I've just put LINUX on it, too, but am somewhat leery about giving root privileges to my kids.
