Lawrence, With all the gushing over the value of SEG software, you and I are probably the only ones who are concerned that today's earnings reflect a bunch of acquired companies with virtually the entire purchase prices written off as in process R & D.
On a positve note, if they didn't use reserves to make numbers, increasing margin with a decreased high end mix would be clearly a positive (unless we find out the rest of the industry also increased margins). Would love to know what's constraining Cheetah output.

''This is progress. They're not where they need to be yet but they're going in the right direction,'' said Jim Porter, president of market research firm Disk/Trend in Mountain View, Calif.

''This was a good quarter and we showed good growth in gross margins,'' said Woody Munroy, a Seagate spokesman.

The company finished the quarter, which ended Oct. 2, with about $1.8 billion in cash, he said.

Seagate's gross margin widened to 20.7 percent from 15.6 percent in the year-ago period.

''I don't expect Seagate to start looking much better until 1999,'' said Porter.
