The Brazilian gold reserves totalled 1,900 tons in 1997, 200 tons
more= compared with 1996, disclosed the Ministry of Mines and Power.
The country's gold reserves are mainly present in Minas Gerais (58%),
Para= (22%), Mato Grosso (9%), Goias (4%) and Bahia (4%). The country's
share of the world's gold reserves fell from 4.15% in 1996 to 3.6% in
1997, while= its share of the wold's production fell from 2.6% to 2.39%
over the period.= Brazil is presently ranked 10th in the world. The
Brazilian gold production= was estimated by the national mineral
department DNPM (Departamento= Nacional de Producao Mineral) at 58.5
tons in 1997, a 2.5% decrease= compared with 1996. Mining companies
extracted 41.06 tons out of the 1997= production. CVRD produced 17.96
tons of gold in 1997, down from 18.01 tons= in 1996. It forecasts a
production of 18.2 tons for 1998. It mainly exports= to Switzerland,
England and the USA. Morro Velho, owned by Anglo American,= increased
its gold production from 7.4 to 8.3 tons between 1996 and 1997.= Rio
Paracatu Mineracao, owned by RTZ and TVX Gold, decreased its
production= from 5.15 to 5 tons over the period.=20
