all: Nokia announces 3rd generation mobile trial in China
BUSINESS WIRE

HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1998--Nokia today
announced it is going ahead with plans to test a trial system for 3rd generation
mobile services in China. Both the network technology and the mobile terminal
technology for the trial will be designed and provided by Nokia.

"The trial system will be installed in early 1999," said Mr Markku Ranta, Head
of Research and Development for Nokia in China. "This is the first major
milestone since we set up the global R&D unit in China this year, and
reaffirms our goal to always be among the first to offer Chinese customers the
latest and most competitive solutions."

Nokia's 3rd generation trial system will be based on WCDMA and GSM
technology, and will demonstrate and test specific services that have potential
demand in China. This approach will ensure that the global development and
application of 3rd generation technology takes into account the requirements
and recommendations of the Chinese market.

Nokia will work with mobile operators and R&D partners in China in order to
ensure maximum benefit of the trial system for the Chinese
telecommunications community. Discussions on the respective partnership
arrangements have been initiated.

Nokia is one of the leading companies in the development of 3rd generation
systems. Nokia announced in the beginning of September its successful first
trial call in Japan with a Nokia-made WCDMA terminal on NTT DoCoMo's
trial specification. The call was made at Nokia's R&D unit in Yokosuka
Research Park, Japan.

Nokia's in-depth know-how of wireless systems is acknowledged world-wide,
and Nokia plays a central role in taking the future-proof GSM platform further
into third-generation telecommunications systems with the UMTS (Universal
Mobile Telecommunications System) and IMT-2000 (International Mobile
Telecommunication System 2000) technology.

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones,
mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications
solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales
totalled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed
on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than
41,000 people worldwide.
