ot- Living somewhere does not always allow you to know the truth. Especially in a country where the news and publishing industry is controlled or regulated by the state. If you are young, or lived in Beijing or Shanghai how would you know about the catastrophes in the countryside? I suspect the books by Chinese intellectuals and the children of Chinese intellectuals that have been published in the west are not available in China. When I was in China I found the Chinese I met had some very strange ideas of what America was like, and equally strange ideas about Chinese history.
