O.K., Sam. If they start dumping u.s. bonds the prices they get will crash and interest rates will soar. They get less for their bonds and higher interest rates will cause the japanese yen to soar vis a vis the dollar, putting a real dent in their exports. Is this really what they want? One of the points which I was trying to make is that the u.s. does have alot of leverage when it comes to japan....what puzzles me is that we are afraid to use it. we should start pulling some troops out of japan and close a few bases there. all we really need to preserve the balance of power in that region is our ballistic submarine fleet and support ships (with some strategically placed bases). we don't need groundtroops or marine air wings there anymore.
