Another Democrat above the law?Moseley-Braun's Sister Reprimanded CHICAGO (AP) -- Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun's sister has been reprimanded by the state's attorney's office for raising funds for the senator's re-election campaign from her desk as an assistant county prosecutor. Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Marsha Moseley sold tickets for two major Chicago fund-raisers for the senator, including one next week with first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Moseley-Braun spokesman Mike Briggs said. The problem is that she put her name and office telephone number as a contact for tickets on fliers promoting the events. Political activity in the workplace is forbidden by prosecutor office policy and is possibly in violation of state election law. When she learned of her sister's efforts Tuesday, Moseley-Braun immediately telephoned her to stop her, Briggs said. Moseley-Braun, who is trailing in the polls against Republican challenger Peter Fitzgerald, also wasted no time in getting news of the gaffe -- and her call to her sister -- to the media, apparently in hopes of preventing any political damage. ''Marsha, you're about to get me into huge trouble,'' the Chicago Tribune, which sat in on the call, reported Moseley-Braun as saying. ''You can't do this, sweetie. At all. No, you can't have them call you at all. I'm surprised that my people didn't tell you this.'' Moseley, a staff attorney in the state's attorney's consumer fraud division and head of the Black Women's Law Association, then allowed her older sister's campaign to release a statement on her behalf. ''I made a mistake by listing my number at the state's attorney's office in fliers for my sister's campaign. I did this without any authorization or knowledge by my sister or her campaign,'' the statement said. The state's attorney's office said officials there were unaware of Moseley's activities. ''She acted without approval and would never have gotten such approval had she sought it,'' said spokesman Bob Benjamin. ''She made a mistake and has been reprimanded.'' He did not say what the reprimand was. Asked whether Moseley might be dismissed, he said: ''I'm not going to speculate. But we're looking further.'' AP-NY-10-15-98 0927EDTnewsday.com
