World's First 6" GaAs Fabrication Facility to be Dedicated; Named Pierre Lamond Wafer Fabrication Facility Business Wire - October 15, 1998 15:42 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1998--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:VTSS) will dedicate the world's first 6" GaAs wafer fabrication facility on Friday, Oct. 16. In a ceremony to be attended by city and state officials, as well as the company's executives and local business people, the facility will be dedicated to Pierre Lamond, who has been the chairman of Vitesse's board of directors since February 1987. The dedication of the new facility to Lamond allows Vitesse to recognize his numerous contributions over the past 12 years to the success of the company, along with his reputation and the respect he commands among his peers and business leaders of the semiconductor industry. Lamond is one of the pioneers in the integrated circuit industry. He joined Fairchild Semiconductor in 1961, becoming general manager of the IC division. In 1967, he co-founded National Semiconductor, where he managed the growth of the IC division from zero to $200 million in 1974. Since 1981, Lamond, as a venture capitalist, has been instrumental in establishing many semiconductor companies including Linear Technology, Cypress Semiconductor, Microchip Technology and Vitesse Semiconductor. Vitesse's Pierre Lamond Wafer Fabrication Facility is equipped with the latest available semiconductor processing equipment for volume production and testing of Vitesse's high-speed integrated circuits. The wafer fab supports both current generations of Vitesse's proprietary H-GaAs technology and will be the platform for future technology development. "This facility will more than triple Vitesse's manufacturing capability," stated Louis R. Tomasetta, Vitesse's president and chief executive officer. "For our customers, this means a greater availability of our high-bandwidth ICs. For Vitesse, this means we have the capacity to continue to support the growth rate we have experienced for the last three years," continued Tomasetta. "We looked at several areas in the United States before deciding to locate our facility in Colorado Springs. Not only was the area and community attractive, but also the city's officials and local vendors were very responsive to our requests, which allowed us to begin production six months ahead of schedule. The Colorado Springs area also has excellent educational institutions and a skilled labor force," concluded Tomasetta.
