Here's another PR from today that somehow didn't show up here PMC ELECTRONICS: PMC launches Voodoo Banshee graphics card OCT 15, 1998, M2 Communications - PMC Electronics, best known for its award winning range of Pace modems, is launching a new high-speed 3D/2D graphics card. Based on 3Dfx Interactive's new Voodoo Banshee chip, the Pace 3D Edge combines powerful 3D gaming and high-end 2D performance all on one card. With support for all Direct3D, OpenGL and Glide based games, the Pace 3D Edge will be compatible with all popular 3D games titles, which will amount to more than 400 by Christmas 1998. The product will go on sale at GBP 139 including VAT and be available from the end of November. The Pace 3D Edge has been designed for use on the Pentium II and AGP platform. AGP provides a direct path to the main PC memory where 3D images are held which speeds up data transfer, providing a significant performance advantage over a PCI solution. Unlike some competitor products, the card also incorporates 16MB of onboard SGRAM memory. It provides faster, more powerful performance than graphics cards with SDRAM and enables additional complicated textures to be stored locally on the graphics card rather than a system's memory. This brings greater speed, realism and special effects to 3D games. For big-screen gaming you can connect the Pace 3D Edge to your television via the TV-Out socket on the card. This enables you to play computer games in a much larger format without losing out on picture quality. The card has also been designed for software DVD acceleration and so with a DVD drive and the supplied software you can play the latest video releases in DVD format on your PC or television. On the 2D side, the Pace 3D Edge has full hardware GDI acceleration for Windows applications. This means that your system won't have to process as much graphical information and should reduce the demands on your processor, enabling you to squeeze more speed out of your Windows applications or any 2D games using DirectDraw. John Cunningham, managing director, comments on the new product: "The Pace 3D Edge is another new addition to PMC's range of hardware peripherals for the PC. We've based the product on technology from 3Dfx who are renowned for delivering the best 3D architecture in the games industry. This stems from our commitment to offering the best technology there is to our customers, whether it's graphics cards, modems or other hardware peripherals." The Pace 3D Edge is manufactured in the UK and is backed by unlimited technical support via telephone, fax or email. The product will be available from high street, mail order and independent retailers. Company background PMC is best known for Pace - the UK's original modem brand. Pace products now extend from award winning V90 ready voice fax modems, ISDN2e terminal adapters, PC video cameras, PC TV & Radio cards to graphics cards. During the trading year 1999 further brand and technology extensions will be announced.
