Why the rate cut? Allow me to butt in, willya.

Jim:

Let me have a crack at it ok and tell me what you think.

Here are some possible answers.

1.To restore confidence in the world markets and here at home.
2.To make sure the U.S economy doesn't falter going forward.
3.Recent data shows slight slowdown in the U.S economy, for example recent retail numbers,Consumer Confidence Index, and Inventory data to mention a few.

4.Employment-Even though the U.S economy and the labor markets are doing fine there are some evidence of some disruption in the employment front, examples recent announcements of layoffs from some major U.S corporations particularly the Brokerage Houses and many others.

5.To preempt any deflationary factors developing here at home major among them a shrinking credit and money supply.

I can go on but you get the drift don't you???? Anyway this is what I think but mind you I am not a trained economist nor am I an untrained one so obviously I could be wrong but I could be very close though.<vbg>
