Are you sure that when you pronounced "sevral" you did not sound like "seven"? Because I did the same and asked 7 people (separately) what number they thought of when they heard "several". The most common answer was more than 2. When pressed for a narrower range, the answers were ~4, 4-6, 3-10, 4-5, 4-6, 4, more than 3 perhaps 6. Nine is about 50% higher than even the high number of 6 out of the 7 people. May be you should check with different people on such vague definitions. In any event, Ballard was far from "plain" or clear. 3Dfx definitely knew the range would have been between 5 and 10 and that is what they should have said.
